Charter Schools

A UNIQUE, INNOVATIVE EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

Although Charter schools date back to the 1970s, they have now become one of the fastest growing innovations in education policy. Their effectiveness has been validated by numerous studies. Over 1 million students attend charter schools in 40 states. Each charter school is different and should be evaluated on its individual merits. At Lehigh Valley Academy, we believe that your school choice should include detailed information about how your school of choice will meet your child's needs. We support school choice and support parents/guardians with information they need to make their choice.  Below is an excerpt from the Pennsylvania Charter School Act  22 of 1997 which details the legislative intent of the establishment of public charter schools.

IT IS THE INTENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, IN ENACTING THIS ARTICLE, TO PROVIDE PUPILS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN SCHOOLS THAT OPERATE INDEPENDENTLY FROM THE EXISTING SCHOOL DISTRICT STRUCTURE, AS A METHOD TO ACCOMPLISH ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

  1. IMPROVE PUPIL LEARNING.
  2. INCREASE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL PUPILS.
  3. ENCOURAGE THE USE OF DIFFERENT AND INNOVATIVE TEACHING METHODS.
  4. CREATE NEW PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS, INCLUDING THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LEARNING PROGRAM AT THE SCHOOL SITE.
  5. PROVIDE PARENTS AND PUPILS WITH EXPANDED CHOICES IN THE TYPES OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE AVAILABLE WITHIN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM.
  6. HOLD THE SCHOOLS ESTABLISHED UNDER THIS ACT ACCOUNTABLE FOR MEETING MEASURABLE ACADEMIC STANDARDS AND PROVIDE THE SCHOOL WITH A METHOD TO ESTABLISH ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEMS.

The links below will lead to websites where you can learn more about the history of charter schools and why they provide a viable alternative to the public education system. Charter schools offer you a choice and a voice in public education. We encourage you to explore all points of view about charter schools.
